Dr. Oz 3-Day Detox (pt. 2)

For those of you considering doing this cleanse, here are a few tips. 

Breakfast

  • Probably the best drink in the bunch
  • Can use fresh and frozen berries
  • Used ground Flax meal - seemed the same
  • Used natural peanut butter instead because I had it
  • Use only the juice of the lemon

Lunch

  • Celery: If using the bagged celery stalks most grocery stores sell, use only two stalks and chop into small pieces
  • Cucumber: Peel it and remove the seeds.  I opted to add half and slice the rest as a snack
  • Kale: Remove stem and only add the leaf.  
  • Apple: I did not peel it 
  • Lime: DO NOT ADD THE FLESH!  It makes the entire drink bitter. Simply add the juice.
  • Coconut Oil: Heat it or add it as a solid. I didn't notice a difference
  • Pineapple:  I used canned (no heavy syrup!)

Snack


The plan calls for a snack smoothie.  It can be a duplicate of your favorite drink.  I opted for cucumber slices and a banana.  You underestimate how much you enjoy chewing your food until your drinking everything! If you decide to include a snack, plan your shopping trip accordingly.  Those extra ingredients are not considered in the pre-made shopping list.

Dinner

  • Cayenne Pepper: Odd addition and over powers the entire flavor of the smoothie.  I decided to omit the spice on days 2 and 3
  • Mango: Take some time to pick out a good one.  A tasty mango makes this drink taste even better
  • Lemon: Like the lime, only add the juice.  



Overall Reaction

Many people weigh themselves before they start this cleanse.  I, however, did not.  Although I was motivated by weight loss, I did it for the challenge and the experience.  In the process, I learned a lot about my eating preferences and highlighted the areas in my diet that I needed to improve.  I was also introduced to kale, coconut oil and almond milk. Kale isn't on my shopping list (yet) but I appreciate it for it's health benefits.  

The most important thing I accomplished was jump starting my healthy eating initiative.  I found myself making healthier food choices during the weekend and didn't succumb to my cravings as easily.

Dr. Oz's 3-Day Detox Cleanse (pt. 1)

To start off my resolutions, I decided to try Dr. Oz's 3-Day Detox Cleanse. It didn't seem too gross and it seemed like a quick way of getting me on track.  The plan is based on 4 smoothies a day. Each one jammed with more fruits and veggies than I eat in a day. 

Prep

 Despite the claim that you can do this cleanse for $16 a day, I ended up leaving Giant with half the produce department and a $100 hole in my pocket.  Even though my taste buds weren't dancing in delight, I was excited by the challenge. For 72 hours: No Wheat, No Dairy, No Meat and... 

No Coffee!!

It seemed silly that I would have a tough time cutting these items out of my diet for three days. A few hours in, however, it wasn't so silly.

Day 1 - Tuesday

The first challenge of the day was skipping my morning coffee.  I drink coffee religiously and enjoy its delicious aroma, taste and kick more than I probably should.  Coffee makes me happy.  Putting my sorrow aside, I grabbed my green tea with lemon and went to work.  

The morning smoothie was pretty good.  Anything with banana and berries in it is yummy.  You can't even taste the hidden spinach. I sipped it slowly and tried to imagine it was a breakfast sandwich.  It was followed up by a multivitamin and a probiotic.  

The lunch drink wasn't as bad as everyone has made it sound. It's a thick green drink which throws many people for a loop, myself included. There are a few tricks, however, I learned over the past 3 days to make these smoothies tasty (summarized in my next post). 

After lunch I started hurtin'.  My head was pounding and I had visions of devouring an entire loaf of bread.  All I wanted to do was eat a donut. It was rough but my overwhelming urge to consume carbs fueled my motivation to continue.  

During this detox I opted out of the snack smoothie and had a banana instead.  I didn't feel like I needed it and craved an item I could actually chew.  

The dinner smoothie was a killer! The spiciness of the cayenne pepper dominated all the other ingredients.  It was tough to get down and a disappointing way to end a tough day.  In my weakness, I stole a bite of shredded cheddar and ate two sweet potato chips.  Don't underestimate the power of chewing!  It's something you really miss on a liquid diet.  

I went to bed, head still pounding, imagining the yummy food I would eat on Friday...

Day 2 - Wednesday

Day 2 wasn't a difficult as Day 1. The breakfast smoothie went down fine.  No complaints.  

The lunch smoothie, on the other hand, was disgusting.  I'll discuss this later but don't add the flesh of the lime....just don't.  I couldn't finish it and relied on my sliced cucumbers and banana to get me through the afternoon.  I was relieved my headache seemed to disappear and I felt healthier and lighter.

After work, Tim and I went to Wegmans. It was probably the most painful grocery trip of my life.  I looked longingly at all the forbidden delicacies.  I never knew so many foods could be mouthwatering. Just 1 more day....    

The dinner smoothie was so much better without the pepper!  I drank it down with no problem.  In my desperation to chew something with flavor I nibbled on a few goldfish crackers and ate a few chucks of mango.

Day 3 - Thursday

Woke up feeling clear headed.  I didn't even miss my coffee today and all my carb cravings were gone.   All the smoothies were yummy but I did feel a bit hungry between lunch and dinner.  No major problems but I did feel an overall sense of being healthier. 


The detox was challenging but not impossible.  It revealed the ugly side of my food choices and motivated me. I recommend it for anyone looking to shake their food addictions and start fresh.

We hear it every January: New year, New you...

Despite the hype and the somewhat unsuccessful nature of resolutions, every January I jot down a list of things I would like to accomplish during the year. I usually vow to be more organized, wake up earlier, eat better and go to the gym more.  The list is where most of my resolutions end.  Life always seems to get in the way and there just aren't enough hours in the day.

This year my motivation is fuel by more than just the new year.  I have a beach vacation coming up in a few weeks and I still have the dreaded......baby weight!  To be honest I didn't gain very much weight during my pregnancy (somewhere between 20-25 lbs).  I lost a majority of it shortly after Maddy was born and by the time I returned to my doctor (6 weeks later) I was within 5 lbs of my original pre-pregnancy weight. My body shape had changed but I was proud I dropped the weight so quickly.

I was doing great but, when Maddy stopped nursing, the pounds packed on. For those that don't know, when you breastfeed you can eat mountains of food because your body is always "working".  When my body quit, I kept eating like a football player (bad combination).  All of a sudden clothes that had fit were shrinking around me.  My selection of jeans dwindled down to a measly 4 pairs and I was too stubborn to buy newer larger ones.

Last but not least, the act that forced me to pull the trigger on all my promised resolutions, recently I was asked IF I WAS EXPECTING!! If you want to sucker punch a new mom's confidence, ask that question. I felt terrible (and still do). I took a hard look at the things I love to eat and the things I don't.  I love anything creamy...I love wine...I love coffee...I love pasta...I love cheese.  I don't care for green veggies...tons of water...and many of the other healthy things that seem to lack the pzazz of sodium-packed-high-calorie-foods.  I realized none of the foods I loved could ease the self loathing inspired by the question above.

So I start 2014 like so many others with a promise to myself to eat better and be healthier.
